Wine tasting above the Saar River

While in Germany in July of 2013 we had the privilege of meeting Florian Lauer who, together with his brother Peter III, runs the Lauer family's wine estate in Ayl on the Saar River. It is said that Peter Lauer wines are among the finest Rieslings produced in Germany, and they certainly have developed quite a following in the States. Some of the Peter Lauer wines are very hard to get a hold of.

Florian took our group via some narrow dirt roads high up on a hill where until 1810 the church of St. Lambert stood. All that is left there are the walls and gate that surrounded the church and its cemetery, a lovely courtyard, a small chapel, and above all a wonderful view of the Saar and the steep vineyards where Peter Lauer wines grow. Below are some pictures of the site and the event (click to enlarge).

Even though I am not much of a white wine drinker the total experience of tasting wine up on that hill, and the view of the vineyards and the river below was unforgettable.

Thank you, Florian.
